The Art of Learning: A Journey in the Pursuit of Excellence

by Josh Waitzkin

Josh Waitzkin knows what it means to be at the top of his game. A public figure since winning his first National Chess Championship at the age of nine, Waitzkin was catapulted into a media whirlwind as a teenager when his father's book "Searching for Bobby Fischer" was made into a major motion picture. After dominating the scholastic chess world for ten years, Waitzkin expanded his horizons, taking on the martial art Tai Chi Chuan and ultimately earning the title of World Champion. How was he able to reach the pinnacle of two disciplines that on the surface seem so different? "I've come to realize that what I am best at is not Tai Chi, and it is not chess," he says. "What I am best at is the art of learning."

In his riveting new book, "The Art of Learning," Waitzkin tells his remarkable story of personal achievement and shares the principles of learning and performance that have propelled him to the top -- twice.

With a narrative that combines heart-stopping martial arts wars and tense chess face-offs with life lessons that speak to all of us, "The Art of Learning" takes readers through Waitzkin's unique journey to excellence. He explains in clear detail how a well-thought-out, principled approach to learning is what separates success from failure. Waitzkin believes that achievement, even at the championship level, is a function of a lifestyle that fuels a creative, resilient growth process. Rather than focusing on climactic wins, Waitzkin reveals the inner workings of his everyday method, from systematically triggering intuitive breakthroughs, to honing techniques into states of remarkable potency, to mastering the art of performance psychology.

Mandela's Way: Fifteen Lessons on Life, Love, and Courage

by Richard Stengel (Author), Nelson Mandela (Preface)

We long for heroes and have too few. Nelson Mandela, who recently celebrated his ninety-first birthday, is the closest thing the world has to a secular saint. He liberated a country from a system of violent prejudice and helped unite oppressor and oppressed in a way that had never been done before.

In Mandela’s Way, Stengel recounts the moments in which “the grandfather of South Africa” was tested and shares the wisdom he learned: why courage is more than the absence of fear, why we should keep our rivals close, why the answer is not always either/or but often “both,” how important it is for each of us to find something away from the world that gives us pleasure and satisfaction—our own garden. Woven into these life lessons are remarkable stories—of Mandela’s childhood as the protégé of a tribal king, of his early days as a freedom fighter, of the twenty-seven-year imprisonment that could not break him.

This compact book is profoundly inspiring. It captures the spirit of this extraordinary man—warrior, martyr, husband, statesman, and moral leader—and spurs us to look within ourselves, reconsider the things we take for granted, and contemplate the legacy we’ll leave behind

The Poetry of Robert Frost: The Collected Poems, Complete and Unabridged

by Robert Frost

Robert Frost was and is America's greatest poet. Excepting, perhaps, W. B. Yeats, he may be the greatest poet to write English in the twentieth century. (To me, it's a toss-up.) To read this volume systematically or desultorily is to become convinced of that. But Frost is, above all, accessible, so the casual reader may not appreciate the difficulty of what he does. Like much of the greatest art his looks easy, even inevitable.

All of Frost's poems are here, plus his two dramatic Masques. When this book first appeared (in 1969) it caused a furor: the editor, it was angrily asserted, presumed too much. He dared to clarify - inserting a hyphen here, excising a comma there. That furor has since died down, as people realize that he did not do away with the sacred texts (any emendation was noted), but simply performed his job as editor.

He regularized spelling and the use of single and double quotes (though not Capitalization, which can legitimately be thought of as integral to the poet's expression (think of e.e. cummings!)), and corrected other obvious errors. The notes give the published variants for each poem, so if you wish you may make your own call on some of these finicky issues.

The Prophet

by Kahlil Gibran

In a distant, timeless place, a mysterious prophet walks the sands. At the moment of his departure, he wishes to offer the people gifts but possesses nothing. The people gather round, each asks a question of the heart, and the man's wisdom is his gift. It is Gibran's gift to us, as well, for Gibran's prophet is rivaled in his wisdom only by the founders of the world's great religions. On the most basic topics--marriage, children, friendship, work, pleasure--his words have a power and lucidity that in another era would surely have provoked the description "divinely inspired." Free of dogma, free of power structures and metaphysics, consider these poetic, moving aphorisms a 20th-century supplement to all sacred traditions--as millions of other readers already have. --Brian Bruya

This book, which is Gibran’s Masterpiece, has become one of the beloved classics of our time. Published in 1923, it has been translated into more than twenty languages, and the American edition alone has sold more than four million copies. It contains his philosophy on major concepts in human life, such as love, joy, self-knowledge, freedom, Law, religion, reason, etc. Here is a summary of some of the concepts.

The Silva Mind Control Method

by Jose Silva

The Silva Method is based on a simple philosophy that you become what you think you are. If you have a negative self-image, then you become that person in the real world. If you want to change who you are in the real world, you need to change who you are in your mind. And he tells you how to do it.

On one level, it's a beginner's course in positive thinking, giving you step-by-step instructions on active meditation and creative visualization. Silva tells you how to go to your "alpha level" (a semi-conscious dream state), create a positive self-image, and turn it into reality. Even if you never get past this beginning stage, if all you can do is repeat Emile Coue's daily affirmations, "Every day in every way, I'm getting better and better" and "Negative thoughts have no influence over me", you'll still be so much better for it. It's really like positive self-programming.

Al Ghazali: Deliverance from Error and the Beginning of Guidance

by Montgomery Watt

Mankind is hungry, but the feast is there, though it is locked up and hidden away. It is the aim of this Series to put it within reach, so that we may stretch forth our hands to the good cheer laid before us.

Deliverance from Error is the spiritual autobiography of Al-Ghazali, and The Beginning of Guidance, complements his spiritual autobiography and sets out his ideal of how the religious man should order his life from hour to hour and day to day.

Al-Ghazali's major contribution lies in religion, philosophy and Sufism. A number of Muslim philosophers had been following and developing several viewpoints of Greek philosophy, including the Neoplatonic philosophy, and had lead to conflict with several Islamic teachings. On the other hand, the movement of sufism was assuming such excessive proportions as to avoid observance of obligatory prayers and duties of Islam. Based on his unquestionable scholarship and personal mystical experience, Ghazali sought to rectify these trends, both in philosophy and sufism.

Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah

by Richard Bach

In the cloud-washed airspace between the cornfields of Illinois and blue infinity, a man puts his faith in the propeller of his biplane. For disillusioned writer and itinerant barnstormer Richard Bach, belief is as real as a full tank of gas and sparks firing in the cylinders...until he meets Donald Shimoda--former mechanic and self-described messiah who can make wrenches fly and Richard's imagination soar....

In Illusions, the unforgettable follow-up to his phenomenal bestseller Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Richard Bach takes to the air to discover the ageless truths that give our souls wings: that people don't need airplanes to soar...that even the darkest clouds have meaning once we lift ourselves above them... and that messiahs can be found in the unlikeliest places--like hay fields, one-traffic-light midwestern towns, and most of all, deep within ourselves.

Stillness Speaks

by Eckhart Tolle

Eckhart Tolle is the author of the bestselling The Power of Now. He explains that readers can look upon the ten short chapters in this new text as "a revival for the present age of the oldest form of recorded spiritual teachings: the sutras of ancient India. Sutras are powerful pointers to the truth in the form of aphorisms or short sayings, with little conceptual elaboration." Brevity is the format here, and that is on purpose. Tolle doesn't want us to spend all our time thinking about these propositions or probes. Indirection is the tried and true method of Eastern teachers and that is his approach as well.

And speaking of spiritual teachers, the author in the introduction offers this take: "A true spiritual teacher does not have anything to teach in the conventional sense of the word, does not have anything to give or add to you, such as new information, beliefs, or rules of conduct. The only function of such a teacher is to help you remove that which separates you from the truth of who you already are and what you already know in the depth of your being. The spiritual teacher is there to uncover and reveal to you that dimension of inner depth that is also peace."

Good to Great ,Why Some Companies Make the Leap...and Other's Don't

by JamesC.Collins

The book "Good to Great" is a report on the results of a lengthy business research study. Jim Collins and a team of researchers asked the question: "Why do some companies make the leap from being good companies to being great companies, and why not others?" Over the course of the book this foundational question is asked several different ways.

Jim Collins and a team of twenty researchers studied the difference between companies that are good and companies that become great. The definition of greatness was made in very practical terms. A great company yields a sustained high return to the owners. For this research a high yield was seven times the general stock market over a fifteen-year period. The study took 10 ½ years of researcher effort and resulted in 2,000 pages of interview transcripts.

The change from "good to great" is guided by, what the author calls, a level five leader. The common characteristics of level five leaders are: modesty, humility, willfulness, courage and company orientation. Level five leaders are unselfish.

Awakening: A Sufi Experience

by Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan

The retreat looms large in the spiritual universe of Sufi master Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan. Away from mundane concerns, the retreatant takes steps to see through the eyes of God, or in Inayat Khan's words, "to think like the Universe." Inayat Khan's synthesis of Indian and Islamic mysticism creates an attractive and palatable spiritual program, couched in the modern language of the new spirituality--Jungian archetypes, Cosmic Christ, spectrum of consciousness, Being of light. Through human beings, Inayat Khan says, the universe itself is alive, and as human beings, we can participate actively in the evolution of the universe. Awakening is a handbook for revisioning God as the universe and transforming our own consciousness. Collected from transcripts of his retreat talks, Awakening guides the reader beyond the self through meditative practices, visualization, whirling, and dhikr, the traditional Sufi ritual of remembrance for inviting the Divine Presence into the heart. At the same time, Pir Vilayat insists that we be awakened in life by loosening the ties of conditioning, challenging deep-seated assumptions, and living a life of simplicity and service. Although its roots are in age-old traditions, Awakening is at the cutting edge of mysticism. --Brian Bruya

Book of Wisdom: The Heart of Tibetan Buddhism

by Osho

Osho is known around the world for his pioneering contribution to meditation — the science of inner transformation — with the unique approach of his "Osho Active Meditations" acknowledging the accelerated pace of the contemporary world and bringing meditation into modern life. Based on the Seven Points of Mind Training by the 11th-century Buddhist mystic Atisa, The Book of Wisdom removes the dust of tradition that has gathered around meditation, conveying the essential science and methodology of the practice with a freshness and spontaneity that is rarely found in contemporary spiritual works. The book is a guide for inner discipline and transformation that is also highly accessible, incorporating light, often humorous question-and-answer sessions between the author and his audience that help readers make the practical connection between spiritual theory and meditation as a lifestyle.

Readers unfamiliar with Osho may remember him by his earlier name, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, and by the image of him grinning from behind the window of one of his many Rolls-Royces at the ashram he founded in Oregon. Controversy and legal problems led him to return to his native India and eventually to change his name to Osho. The author died in 1990, but his followers carry on his teachings and continue to publish his voluminous writings. This book takes the Seven Points of Mind Training by Atisha, an 11th-century Tibetan mystic, as the starting point for Osho's reflections. The title is misleading, since the text and the question-and-answer sessions have more to do with Osho's own point of view than Tibetan Buddhism, and his is, at times, a very eccentric perspective. Mixed in with some fairly standard insights into spiritual practice are overt criticisms of many religious traditions and their followers as well as a peculiar penchant for jokes, many of them off-color. It seems the title is designed to cash in on the current interest in Tibetan Buddhism, and it would be a shame if it distracts the curious from the many worthy titles on the subject currently available.

The Shadow Effect: Illuminating the Hidden Power of Your True Self

by Deepak Chopra; Debbie Ford; Marianne Williamson

Deepak Chopra, Debbie Ford, and Marianne Williamson — New York Times bestselling authors and internationally acclaimed teachers — have joined together to share their knowledge on one of the most crucial obstacles to happiness we face—the shadow. These three luminaries, each with a signature approach, bring to light the parts of ourselves we deny but that still direct our life. For it is only when we embrace our shadow that we discover the gifts of our authentic nature.

The shadow exists within all of us. It is a part of us and yet we spend most of our life running from it. But far from being scary, our dark side holds the promise of a better, more fulfilling life. Our shadow makes itself known every day. It is the reason we get furious over a friend showing up ten minutes late, yell at our parents or kids when they have done nothing wrong, and sabotage our own success at the worst possible time. Until we are able to embrace our dualistic nature, we will continue to hurt ourselves and those closest to us and fall short of our potential.

Combining the wisdom of three experts, The Shadow Effect is a practical and profound guide to discovering the gifts of our shadow. These three authors powerfully pierce the veil of our unclaimed self, releasing us from the past and propelling us on a journey to wholeness. No longer living a half life, we are capable of achieving our dreams and reclaiming the happiness that is our birthright.

by  Rabindranath Tagore

Moving, heart-felt prose poems by the beloved and much admired Bengali poet and mystic who first achieved international fame (and a Nobel Prize) in 1913 with his translation of these moving poems. Reminiscent of Blake and Gibran, they include many works that are almost biblical in their rhythms, phrasing and images. With an introduction by William Butler Yeats.

This English version of "Gitanjali" is a series of prose poems that reflect on the interrelationships among the poet/speaker, the deity, and the world. Although Tagore had a Hindu background, the spirituality of this book is generally expressed in universal terms; I could imagine a Christian, a Buddhist, a Muslim, or an adherent of another tradition finding much in this book that would resonate with him or her.

The language in this book is often very beautiful. The imagery includes flowers, bird songs, clouds, the sun, etc.; one line about "the riotous excess of the grass" reminded me of Walt Whitman. Tagore's language is sensuous and sometimes embraces paradox. Like Whitman and Emily Dickinson, he sometimes seems to be resisting traditional religion and prophetically looking towards a new spirituality.

If... (Questions For The Game of Life)

by  Evelyn McFarlane, James Saywell

In an elegant, two-color format, punctuated with intriguing drawings, If . . . poses hundreds of questions ranging from practical to maddening, moral to hilarious--which, if read alone, inspire self-exploration; if shared, spark fascinating discussions at gatherings, dinner parties, or meetings.

This is a fun book to get people involved together and to challenge people to think about their lives and what is important or interesting to them. Whose mind would you want from history, what three musicians from history would you jam with, what medical cure would you want to discover? The questions keep us thinking and give a glimpse of our friends and family that we might not have had. This book is also good for classrooms where students have to write essays, though for younger students, the questions should be carefully selected as they can be a little provacative. I highly recommend this book, even if it's for sitting alone and pondering the many questions.

There's a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem

by Wayne W. Dyer

In this inspiring new book, bestselling author Wayne W. Dyer puts forth the powerful notion: namely that our ultimate purpose is to fulfill a spiritual destiny. In There's a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem, Dyer shows us that there is an omnipresent spiritual force right at our fingertips that contains the solution to our problems-from ill health, to financial worries, to relationship difficulties. Drawing from various spiritual traditions, especially from the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, Dyer helps us unplug from the material world and awaken to the divine within.

The first part of the book provides the essential foundations for spiritual problem solving, and explains the basic principles needed to understand and access the world of spirit. In these chapters, you'll read the words of Pantanjali, a Yogi mystic whose teachings and practices deeply affected Dyer and informed his realization that the spiritual force is everywhere.

The second half, organized around the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, contains specific suggestions to help readers put spiritual problem-solving into practice. The prayer embodies the fundamental message of this book. St. Francis's legacy is one of love, harmony, and service-putting our collective energies toward what we are for instead of what we are against. Each of these last seven chapters begins with a line from this prayer; Dyer then goes on to offer specific and practical suggestions for applying the teaching to everyday problems. These suggestions include affirmations, writing exercises, guided meditations, and other strategies for putting St. Francis's words and the wisdom of this book into practice.

The White Tiger: A Novel (Man Booker Prize)

by Aravind Adiga

Introducing a major literary talent, The White Tiger offers a story of coruscating wit, blistering suspense, and questionable morality, told by the most volatile, captivating, and utterly inimitable narrator that this millennium has yet seen.

Balram Halwai is a complicated man. Servant. Philosopher. Entrepreneur. Murderer. Over the course of seven nights, by the scattered light of a preposterous chandelier, Balram tells us the terrible and transfixing story of how he came to be a success in life -- having nothing but his own wits to help him along.

Born in the dark heart of India, Balram gets a break when he is hired as a driver for his village's wealthiest man, two house Pomeranians (Puddles and Cuddles), and the rich man's (very unlucky) son. From behind the wheel of their Honda City car, Balram's new world is a revelation. While his peers flip through the pages of Murder Weekly ("Love -- Rape -- Revenge!"), barter for girls, drink liquor (Thunderbolt), and perpetuate the Great Rooster Coop of Indian society, Balram watches his employers bribe foreign ministers for tax breaks, barter for girls, drink liquor (single-malt whiskey), and play their own role in the Rooster Coop. Paulo Coelho: A Warrior's Life: The Authorized Biography

by Fernando Morais

Paulo Coelho: A Warrior's Life is the first-ever biography of the man whose books have sold an astounding 100 million copies worldwide, making him one of the bestselling authors of all time.

Paulo Coelho's life begins with a complicated birth in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in August 1947. He was known as the "boy who was born dead" and who ultimately survived against all odds. Before he became internationally known as a worldwide bestselling author, Paulo lived many different lives. He flirted with suicide, was committed by his parents to insane asylums, suffered the brutality of electric shock therapy, dove into drugs, tried several varieties of sex, met the devil, spent time in prison, helped revolutionize Brazilian rock with musician Raul Seixas, and finally rediscovered his faith in 1986 as he walked the sacred Road to Santiago de Compostela, a medieval pilgrim's route between France and Spain.

Coelho would later describe this life-changing spiritual experience in his first book, The Pilgrimage. The following year, The Alchemist established his worldwide reputation. The novel has already achieved the status of a universally admired modern classic. Now, for the first time, discover the life story of one of the most widely read and adored authors of our time.

Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance

by Barack Obama

In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a black African father and a white American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father—a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man—has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey—first to a small town in Kansas, from which he retraces the migration of his mother’s family to Hawaii, and then to Kenya, where he meets the African side of his family, confronts the bitter truth of his father’s life, and at last reconciles his divided inheritance.

The Nibble Theory and the Kernal of Power: A Book About Leadership, Self-Empowerment, and Personal Growth

by Kaleel Jamison

There are many books today written about leadership, change, personal growth but nothing is quite as simple and explicit as the book “The Nibble Theory and the Kernel of Power” by Kaleel Jamison.

It is easy to talk of personal growth as a ME concept; what do I do, what are my beliefs, my strengths etc. You have to remember that there is a world out there that will affect that growth. Compliments make you feel good and create confidence; rejections lower your self worth. This is why we have to deal with ourselves inside-out while familiarizing that change with the unstable environment outside.

The Winner Stands Alone: A Novel

by Paulo Coelho

The beloved, bestselling international author of The Alchemist returns with another haunting novel—a thrilling journey into our constant fascination with the worlds of fame, fortune, and celebrity.

A profound meditation on personal power and innocent dreams that are manipulated or undone by success, The Winner Stands Alone is set in the exciting worlds of fashion and cinema. Taking place over the course of twenty-four hours during the Cannes Film Festival, it is the story of Igor, a successful, driven Russian entrepreneur who will go to the darkest lengths to reclaim a lost love—his ex-wife, Ewa. Believing that his life with Ewa was divinely ordained, Igor once told her that he would destroy whole worlds to get her back. The conflict between an individual evil force and society emerges, and as the novel unfolds, morality is derailed.

Meet the players and poseurs behind the scenes at Cannes—the "Superclass" of producers, actors, designers, and supermodels, as well as the aspiring starlets, has-been stars, and jaded hangers-on. Adroitly interweaving the characters' stories, Paulo Coelho uses his twelfth novel to paint an engrossing picture of a world overrun by glamour and excess, and shows us the possibly dire consequences of our obsession with fame.

Practicing the Power of Now: Essential Teachings, Meditations, and Exercises from The Power of Now

by Eckhart Tolle

In The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle shared the enlightenment he himself experienced after a startling personal transformation. This book extracts the essence of his teachings about how to free oneself from enslavement to the mind. His views go beyond any particular religion, doctrine, or guru. The goal is to be able to enter into and sustain an enlightened state of consciousness throughout everyday life. Through meditations and simple techniques, Eckhart shows readers how to quiet their thoughts, see the world in the present moment, and find the truest path to happiness.

All you really need to do is accept the moment fully. You are then at ease in the here and now and at ease with yourself.
Throughout the spiritual classic The Power of Now are specific practices and clear keys that show us how to discover for ourselves the 'grace, ease, and lightness' that comes when we simply quiet our thoughts and see the world before us in the present moment.

Practicing the Power of Now is a carefully arranged series of excerpts from the The Power of Now that directly gives us those exercises and keys. Return to those words, reflect on the words, reflect even on the space between the words and - maybe over time, maybe immediately - you'll discover something of life-changing significance.

A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose (Oprah's Book Club, Selection 61)

by  Eckhart Tolle

In A New Earth, spiritual teacher and author Eckhart Tolle (The Power of Now) advocates present moment awareness and the dismantling of the ego as the path towards awakened living. A New Earth gets its title from a Bible verse referring to the rising of "a new heaven and a new earth." According to Tolle, "heaven" is the awakened state that will bring about "a new earth" in the outer world, the world of form.

Building on the astonishing success of The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle presents readers with an honest look at the current state of humanity: He implores us to see and accept that this state, which is based on an erroneous identification with the egoic mind, is one of dangerous insanity.

Tolle tells us there is good news, however. There is an alternative to this potentially dire situation. Humanity now, perhaps more than in any previous time, has an opportunity to create a new, saner, more loving world. This will involve a radical inner leap from the current egoic consciousness to an entirely new one.

In illuminating the nature of this shift in consciousness, Tolle describes in detail how our current ego-based state of consciousness operates. Then gently, and in very practical terms, he leads us into this new consciousness. We will come to experience who we truly are—which is something infinitely greater than anything we currently think we are—and learn to live and breathe freely.

The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable

by  Nassim Nicholas Taleb

The Black Swan is probably the strongest statement of enlightened empiricism since Ernst Mach refused to acknowledge the existence of the atom. Of course, in theory, everyone today is supposed to be an empiricist - all right-thinking intellectuals claim to base their views solely on positive scientific observation. But very few sincerely confront the implications of rigorous empiricism. Specifically, few confront "the problem of induction," illustrated here by the story of the black swan.

Briefly: observing an event once does not predict it will occur again in the future. This remains true regardless of the number of observations one adds to the pile. Or, as Taleb, recapitulating David Hume, has it: the observation of even a million white swans does not justify the statement "all swans are white." There is no way to know that somewhere out there a black swan is not hiding, disproving the rule and nullifying our "knowledge" of swans. The problem of induction tells us that we cannot really learn from our experiences. It makes knowledge very problematic, if not impossible. And yet, humans do behave -almost without exception- as though they believe that experience teaches us lessons. This is forgivable; there is no better path to knowledge. But before proceeding, one must account for the limits that the problem of induction places on our claims to knowledge. And humans seem, at every turn, to lack this critical self-awareness.

Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia

by  Elizabeth Gilbert

If wisdom could be traded like currency, author Elizabeth Gilbert would be a wealthier woman by far, though it's likely her fabulous memoir, Eat Pray Love, racked up a few bucks during its stay on the New York Times bestseller list. What Gilbert imparts in her story--basically, bracing self-knowledge acquired during a year of travel following a bitter divorce and a shattered rebound romance--is at once astounding yet totally obvious. As Gilbert would attest, albeit more eloquently, the most important stuff in life is pretty much under our noses, but we occasionally have to shake ourselves senseless in order to see it (enlisting a guru and a medicine man are highly recommended).

Take this simple but devastating observation posited while Gilbert was on the final leg of a global tour. "I have a history of making decisions very quickly about men. I have always fallen in love fast and without measuring risks. I have a tendency not only to see the best in everyone, but to assume that everyone is emotionally capable of reaching his highest potential. I have fallen in love more times than I care to count with the highest potential of a man, rather than with the man himself, and then I have hung on to the relationship for a long time (sometimes far too long) waiting for the man to ascend to his own greatness. Many times in romance I have been the victim of my own optimism."

A Short History of Myth:  (Myths, The) Human beings have always been mythmakers...

by  Karen Armstrong

What Armstrong does very well is to explain how advances in the material and economic condition of human civilization throughout history and prehistory interacted with this basic human need to transcend his immediate condition to create various epochs of myth.

She goes beyond myth to explain the competitors to myth, be it ritual without mythology (i.e., Confucianism) or logos (i.e., Greek rationalism) and how they had their roots in myth and why they are linked still. Her explanations are lucid and her prose is clear. For such a short book, she packs a lot of information in and, more importantly, compelling ideas.

egonomics: What Makes Ego Our Greatest Asset (or Most Expensive Liability)

by  David Marcum & Steven Smith

In this flawed, uneasy mix of business analysis and psychological study, business consultants Marcum and Smith offer a defense of ego and its broadly misunderstood counterpart, humility, along with a discussion of how to maneuver ego to effectively encourage individual talent and sound business practice. Though the very word has negative connotations, the authors see ego as a vital asset to business growth. Employees who handle ego effectively are more confident, assertive and willing to listen to others and thus more equipped to compete and excel.

Those who don't are forced to work from a place of defensiveness and an oversensitivity to outside judgment. Marcum and Smith effectively demonstrate the benefits of successful ego management in situations as varied as Fred Rogers's fight to keep government funding for PBS and Sojourner Truth's Ain't I a Woman speech, but their plans for ego management in the workplace are vague, confusingly organized and unspecific. The authors have backgrounds in business and psychology, but skim too swiftly over both to be satisfying on either level. Without firm strategy, this is a magazine article stretched to book length, neither informative nor particularly entertaining.

  Alwaleed: Businessman, Billionaire, Prince

by  Riz Khan

Khan, independent broadcaster and journalist, offers a unique window into the life and times of His Royal Highness Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (known as Alwaleed), who is described by the Wall Street Journal as the "Arab Warren Buffet." Age 50 and U.S.-educated, Alwaleed is currently the fifth wealthiest man in the world.

His prominent family ties in Saudi Arabia as well as in Lebanon lead him, a Muslim who identifies with Western ways and champions reform, to serve as a bridge between the Middle East and the West. The most successful investor outside the U.S., he owns vast investment portfolios that include such brand names as Citibank, EuroDisney, and Apple.

This is a fascinating tale of a financial giant who gave the author unprecedented access to himself and those who surround him, resulting in a treasure trove of information. However, like all biographies written with the support of the subject, many could question its objectivity.

  Be Your Own Life Coach

by Fiona Harrold

In this highly motivating new book, Fiona Harrold uses her experience as a life coach to show us that we can turn our own lives around. With encouragement, humour, and an emphasis on the practical, Fiona sets out the 10 steps to taking control of our lives.

We must set our goals, however crazy they may seem, and then start on the path to achieving them. Along the way, Fiona uses case studies, affirmations, and motivational techniques to guide and coach her readers.

Although she advises that acceptance of the existence of a cosmic force outside yourself will enhance your sense of personal worth, she has controversial thoughts about the central tenets of some religions. You should, she suggests, rethink your relationship with any teaching which requires you to regard yourself as a worthless miserable sinner. She blames such deeply conditioned cultural attitudes for much of the low self-esteem in Western Europe.

How to See Yourself As You Really Are
by His Holiness the Dalai Lama (Author), Jeffrey, Ph.D. Hopkins (Author)

Like the two wings of a bird, love and insight work cooperatively to bring about enlightenment, says a fundamental Buddhist teaching. According to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, we each possess the ability to achieve happiness and a meaningful life, but the key to realizing that goal is self-knowledge. In How to See Yourself As You Really Are, the world's foremost Buddhist leader and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize shows readers how to recognize and dispel misguided notions of self and embrace the world from a more realistic -- and loving -- perspective.

Step-by-step exercises help readers shatter their false assumptions and ideas and see the world as it actually exists. By directing our attention to the false veneer that so bedazzles our senses and our thoughts, His Holiness sets the stage for discovering the reality behind appearances. But getting past one's misconceptions is only a prelude to right action, and the book's final section describes how to harness the power of meditative concentration to the service of love, and vice versa, so that true altruistic enlightenment is attained.

Enlivened by personal anecdotes and intimate accounts of the Dalai Lama's own life experiences, How to See Yourself As You Really Are is an inspirational and empowering guide to achieving self-awareness that can be read and enjoyed by spiritual seekers of all faiths.

Now, Discover Your Strengths
by Marcus Buckingham (Author), Donald O. Clifton (Author)

Editorial Review -'s Best of 2001

Effectively managing personnel--as well as one's own behavior--is an extraordinarily complex task that, not surprisingly, has been the subject of countless books touting what each claims is the true path to success. That said, Marcus Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton's Now, Discover Your Strengths does indeed propose a unique approach: focusing on enhancing people's strengths rather than eliminating their weaknesses. Following up on the coauthors' popular previous book, First, Break All the Rules, it fully describes 34 positive personality themes the two have formulated (such as Achiever, Developer, Learner, and Maximizer) and explains how to build a "strengths-based organization" by capitalizing on the fact that such traits are already present among those within it.

Most original and potentially most revealing, however, is a Web-based interactive component that allows readers to complete a questionnaire developed by the Gallup Organization and instantly discover their own top-five inborn talents. This device provides a personalized window into the authors' management philosophy which, coupled with subsequent advice, places their suggestions into the kind of practical context that's missing from most similar tomes. "You can't lead a strengths revolution if you don't know how to find, name and develop your own," write Buckingham and Clifton. Their book encourages such introspection while providing knowledgeable guidance for applying its lessons. --Howard Rothman

He found that water from clear springs and water that has been exposed to loving words shows brilliant, complex, and colorful snowflake patterns. In contrast, polluted water, or water exposed to negative thoughts, forms incomplete, asymmetrical patterns with dull colors. Rumi's Daughter
by Muriel Maufroy

Book Description
Rumi is now acknowledged as one of the great mystical poets of the Western world, with huge sales of the many collections of his poetry. Not much is known about his life except that he lived in thirteenth-century Anatolia (now Turkey), had a great spiritual friendship with a wild man called Shams, brought an adopted daughter into his family, and was distraught when Shams finally disappeared.

Rumi's Daughter is the delightful novel about Kimya, the girl who was sent from her rural village to live in Rumi's home. She already had mystical tendencies, and learned a great deal under Rumi's tutelage. Eventually she married Shams, a strange man who was an unusual husband, almost totally absorbed by his longings for God. Their marriage was fiery and different and, in the end, dissolved by Kimya's death - after which Shams vanished.

Rumi's Daughter tells Kimya's story with great charm and tenderness. Well written and thought-provoking, it is sure to draw comparison with Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist, and also to add something fresh and new to what is so far known about Rumi.

Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies
by James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras

Book Description
Built to Last identifies 18 "visionary" companies and sets out to determine what's special about them. To get on the list, a company had to be world famous, have a stellar brand image, and be at least 50 years old. We're talking about companies that even a layperson knows to be, well, different: the Disneys, the Wal-Marts, the Mercks.

Whatever the key to the success of these companies, the key to the success of this book is that the authors don't waste time comparing them to business failures. Instead, they use a control group of "successful-but-second-rank" companies to highlight what's special about their 18 "visionary" picks. Thus Disney is compared to Columbia Pictures, Ford to GM, Hewlett Packard to Texas Instruments, and so on.

The core myth, according to the authors, is that visionary companies must start with a great product and be pushed into the future by charismatic leaders. There are examples of that pattern, they admit: Johnson & Johnson, for one. But there are also just too many counterexamples--in fact, the majority of the "visionary" companies, including giants like 3M, Sony, and TI, don't fit the model. They were characterized by total lack of an initial business plan or key idea and by remarkably self-effacing leaders. Collins and Porras are much more impressed with something else they shared: an almost cult-like devotion to a "core ideology" or identity, and active indoctrination of employees into "ideologically commitment" to the company.

The comparison with the business "B"-team does tend to raise a significant methodological problem: which companies are to be counted as "visionary" in the first place? There's an air of circularity here, as if you achieve "visionary" status by ... achieving visionary status. So many roads lead to Rome that the book is less practical than it might appear. But that's exactly the point of an eloquent chapter on 3M. This wildly successful company had no master plan, little structure, and no prima donnas. Instead it had an atmosphere in which bright people were both keen to see the company succeed and unafraid to "try a lot of stuff and keep what works." --Richard Farr

As a Man Thinketh  :
by James Allen

Book Description
JAllen has a positive basis for his philosophical thought in that he says law, justice, righteousness are the molding and moving forces in the spiritual governing of the world. When man rights himself humanity, in turn, learns that the universe is right and in focus. One must attain a spiritual focus to learn that as things are viewed, in turn one is viewed by things. The focal point of view changes as things are viewed in one light and perspective and then another, while simultaneously, when being viewed, the focus again is ever changing. All these elements, actions, interactions, gradations flow one into and out of the other to create a spiritual focus.

Your thoughts and your dreams determine what you are and what you will be. This little book is meant to stimulate men and women to the discovery and perception of the truth that they themselves are makers of themselves, by virtue of the thoughts which they choose and encourage. Jonathan Livingston Seagull
by Richard Bach

Editorial Riview
"Most gulls don't bother to learn more than the simplest facts of flight--how to get from shore to food and back again," writes author Richard Bach in this allegory about a unique bird named Jonathan Livingston Seagull. "For most gulls it is not flying that matters, but eating. For this gull, though, it was not eating that mattered, but flight." Flight is indeed the metaphor that makes the story soar. Ultimately this is a fable about the importance of seeking a higher purpose in life, even if your flock, tribe, or neighborhood finds your ambition threatening. (At one point our beloved gull is even banished from his flock.) By not compromising his higher vision, Jonathan gets the ultimate payoff: transcendence. Ultimately, he learns the meaning of love and kindness. The dreamy seagull photographs by Russell Munson provide just the right illustrations--although the overall packaging does seem a bit dated (keep in mind that it was first published in 1970). Nonetheless, this is a spirituality classic, and an especially engaging parable for adolescents. --Gail Hudson

From AudioFile
Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a bird who teaches us how to follow our dreams and reach our goals, no matter what anyone else might think. Jonathan is a seagull who wants to master the art of flying, even though his flock has told him many times that all seagulls should concentrate on is getting food. Jonathan has tried to be a "good gull," but he cannot quell his urge to fly. Richard Bach reads this fable in a calm voice that sounds like a blowing wind. When there's fighting among the gulls, the tone of his voice reflects that anger. Jonathan's tale moves us as much as Richard Bach's voice does.

Secret of Secrets:
by Abd al-Qadir al- Jilani

Brief Description
The Secret of Secrets, considered one of the greatest works fo classical Sufi myticism and interpreted here for the first time in English by Shaykh Tosun Bayrak al-Jerrahi, was written by 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani (1077-1166), the eponymous founder of the Qadiriya order, the first of the great Sufi broherhoods which radiate throughout the Islamic world. Born near the Caspian Sea, he was son of the great saint Fatima Bint 'Abdullah al-Sawmai. After a period of intense intellectual and mystical training Abd al-Qadir received the Khirqa (robe of initiation) and was soon recognised as a saint and scholar, consulted, loved and revered by caliph pauper alike. As one of the most venerated figures in Sufism his burial place in Baghdad still attracts numerous visitors from many countries.

The Secret of Secrets reveals in a brief compass the very essence of Sufism, Showing how outward practices such as prayer, fasting and almsgiving contain a wealth of inner dimensions which must be discovered and enjoyed if external actions are to be performed in a manner pleasing to God. When this is achieved the soul finds true peace and the spiritual life becomes complete. The book forms a bridge between two of the author's more famous works, Wealth for the Seekers (Ghunyat al-Talibin) and his Openings of the Unseen (Futuh al-Ghayb). It is said that unless one has discovered the Secret, one may not be able to absorb the impact of the Openings.

Tosun Bayrak has also provided an introduction to the work in the long -standing tradition of those who have venerated the Shaykh, and attributed to him numerous miracles-a tradition that began soon after 'Abd al-Qadir's death and has continued through the ages.. Other works by Tosun Bayrak al-Jerrahi include The Most Beautiful Names, and a translation of Ibn al-Husayn al-Sulami's Way of Sufi Chivalry.

Self-Esteem: A Family Affair
by Jean Illsley Clarke

Brief Description
Self-esteem is the foundation for a successful life, a happy family, and a healthy culture. This popular book offers a series of blueprints for building that foundation at home in the everyday interactions between parents and children and in the big decisions about child care and lifestyle. A book for all families, whether they include single parents or stepparents, foster children or adopted children, newborns or teens, Self-Esteem: A Family Affair is a wise and practical guide to nourishing self-esteem in adults and children alike.

Parent educator Jean Illsley Clarke begins by encouraging parents to find their strengths and to trust their judgment as they look for the best way to raise a happy, confident family. She presents a broad range of imaginative suggestions for dealing with individual family members in nurturing and supportive ways in all manner of situations - from having a baby to coping with a toddler, from putting together a blended family to moving to a new neighbourhood, from finding day care to taking in foster children. Clarke illustrates each case with the stories of families who have confronted these issues and provides useful tools and ideas for building self-esteem through examples, advice, worksheets, exercises, and tips.

Underlying Clarke's approach is the belief that children's needs are best met by adults whose own needs are attended to. To this end, her book offers a variety of creative and workable options for parents to build the self-esteem of children without losing sight of their own emotional well-being - making self-esteem truly a family affair.

Stephen Hawking A Life in Science

by Michael White, John Gribbin

Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
The forces shaping the life of renowned physicist Hawking seem as strangely charged as those he describes in his physics. His British biographers, both scientists, examine their subject's personal history and ably fill in the spaces between his great leaps of theory. They avoid sentimentalizing the physicist's disabling ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), which struck him in his early 20s, while acknowledging that the condition has had a dramatic impact on his life and reputation. Gathering information from Hawking's colleagues (but not his estranged wife), the authors discuss his authorial success as well as his academic career, not failing to offer such bits of humanizing gossip as that he has a poster of Marilyn Monroe on his office door. Readers of Hawking's bestselling A Brief History of Time will find much of interest in this longer view of physics at work in one extraordinary person's life.
